F&G’s favourite never fail pastas #2: Spaghetti alla carbonara

Spaghetti Carbonara is a long running obsession in my family. My Dad’s obsession, that is. He must have tried every recipe under the sun and we must have sampled dozens of versions. With cream. Without. Some claggy. Some too wet. Some too eggy. Just never quite right. Alway nice, but never reaching the dizzying heights of perfection. Then not too long ago, Dad finally served the ultimate rendition and it reminded me of the pure and fantastic simplicity of Spaghetti alla Carbonara. Eggs and bacon. Perfect in every language.

BOOK REVIEW: British Seasonal Food by Mark Hix

I have literally dozens of cookbooks, and their usual fate is to sit forlornly on the shelf only to be taken down and flicked through once or twice a year when I’m really stuck for an idea (though this should not be revealed to my husband who already suspects this to be the case and is beginning to forbid me to buy any more – horror). There are however a few exceptions; books that are dog-eared and food splattered from constant and varied use. These books are as indispensable to me as my Le Creuset casserole or my favourite knife. And I have a sneaking suspicion that British Seasonal Food by Mark Hix is going to become one of these oft-opened books, always at hand to provide me with some interesting and more importantly seasonal inspiration. In the mere weeks it has been on my shelf it has already been taken down, and even cooked out of, way over its allotted number of times.

Jamie’s spinach and feta filo pie

You know sometimes you look at something in a cook book which looks delicious but you know that if you recreated it at home it would look nothing like the pretty picture in the book? Well when I saw the spinach and feta filo pie in Jamie Oliver’s new book I thought exactly that. But lo and behold, I cooked it and it looked exactly like the carefully styled picture in the book. And it tasted damned good too.

A spicy breakfast treat: Breakfast burrito

Whilst I was on my recent pregnancy-enduced spice kick my body demanded chilli pretty much wherever it could get it (I know you know this, but it dominated my diet for a good while so it’s natural it will crop up in this here diary of my kitchen, innit?). After some serious consideration I realised that the only way I could reasonably wrangle chilli in pre-midday was to dish up a spicy breakfast burrito. This I did. A good many times. The below recipe is the product of my furtive chilli endeavours.

A glorious day for Brighton: the opening of La Cave à Fromage

Most days I love my blog. Some days, I’ll be honest, it’s a bit of a time-sucking drag. Then every now and again I have a day that makes me want to jump for joy and give my blog a big fat smack on the lips. Last week I had one of those days. The clouds parted, the angels sang in immaculate chorus, and heaven’s benediction fell upon my head: I had been anointed as “the chosen one”. Thanks to my blog (I love you bloggy blog blog) I was invited to come down to the newly opened Brighton outpost of La Cave à Fromage and have a cheese tasting. If you don’t know, cheese is like the holy grail of food. And I was going to eat it all…

The salad diaries, vol 1: Greek Salad (12 days to Italy)

It’s twelve days until I go to Italy. Now being a girl, that translates to: it’s twelve days until I have to squeeze myself into a bikini and reveal my pasty and untoned body to the world. This is not good. No doubt this will result in a lot of huffing and puffing from many readers and I will admit that I am not proud of this reaction to what is unequivocally an exciting and delightful prospect, but it is an honest reaction. And, what’s more, it’s the reaction of a good proportion of the female population. What this boils down to is this fact: I have 12 days to do something practical about this worrying circumstance. Plan of action: gym and salads.

A surprisingly unlazy dinner: Roasted tomato and ricotta risotto

The other day I popped into Tesco (not my usual shop of choice) to pick up something quick for dinner. I had intended to go for something super lazy, perhaps even just opting for a can of baked beans for my jazzed up beans on toast (you’ve got to love baked beans). However, to my delight I noticed that they’ve started selling pick’n’mix tomatoes, which is an absolutely genius idea and one I hope Sainsbury’s will nick. As my husband utterly revels in anything tomatoey, I immediately resolved to abandon the lazy dinner I had planned and make him a special dinner treat of roasted mixed tomato risotto.
