British BBQ-time: Lamb koftas with pickled onion salad and feta


Over recent years the changing of the clocks has not only heralded the arrival of British Summer Time, but also the ever unexpected though increasingly reliable burst of gorgeous summer-esque weather. The last week or so has been a scorcher, which has led me to crave light and fresh summery dinners of salads and, well, salads to be honest. It’s been a bit salad heavy up in Feed & Gastro towers, much to Sven’s chagrin probably (never a particularly professed lover of salad). So when I thought Sven was about up to his eyeballs with chicken salad, Greek salad, and cous cous salad, and every other salad under the sun, I thought it was about time to turn to meat.

No-haste-big-taste curry: Malaysian beef rendang


I’ll hold my hands up right from the start, this doesn’t look like an authentic “rendang”. Firstly, it’s pretty darn wet and doesn’t a bit resemble the other rendangs I’ve seen out there (all of which look marv). And secondly, I fiddled with the recipe a bit. However, I’m going to dub this a “wet rendang” (which is a real thing, I swears it), and press on confidently.

A taste of Christmas #1: Butternut squash, chestnut, sage and pancetta risotto


Christmas is my absolute favourite time of the year. When the 1st of December finally finally rolls around I have reached an unholy level of impatient anticipation. The Christmas playlist has been set up weeks ago on spotify and has been playing on loop ever since. Christmas chutneys and mincemeats are happily maturing in a cupboard. Christmas wish lists have been distributed early to family and presents are beginning to stack up behind the sofa (shush, don’t tell). I’ve been repeating, rain-man-like, the number of days until Christmas daily (and even hourly) until my colleagues’ nerves are in tatters. I am well and truly ready for a month of food and festivities. When we finally reach December my taste buds are at fever pitch level. So, this is when I  break out my favourite festive flavours and earnestly attempt to incorporate them into every meal I cook.

Craving spice: Malaysian chicken curry


Now that I can finally talk about the fact that I’m up the duff, I can tell you about my craving for spicy foods. For the first month or so of my pregnancy, I could not get enough chilli and heat. It was the inspiration for my burritos, the drive behind a heinous number of Indian and Thai takeaways, and the (no doubt frustrating) impetus for me throwing chilli into absolutely everything I cooked. It was also the motivation for me cooking up my favourite Malaysian curry.

American favourites: Wail, no burritos in Brighton (so I had to make them myself): Carnitas (braised pork) Burritos


Recently I’ve been hankering after burritos. Like I mean I’ve been downright craving them. The problem is, when you want a burrito on the run Brighton doesn’t really throw up any viable options. We have El Taco which certainly does a job in a bind, but the microwave is in full force and the resulting burritos leave a lot to be desired if truth be told. If you want a decent taco on the fly in Brighton I’m afraid you are really shit out of luck.

Lamb flatbreads on a Tuesday, Nige?


When stuck for meal ideas, one of my favourite ways to find inspiration is to look through Nigel Slater’s Kitchen Diaries. You probably know the book, but if not it does pretty much what it says on the tin: a year in Nigel Slater’s kitchen. The reason I love it is because it’s a month by month and day by day account of seasonal recipes. You can pretty much go to the very day of the month and see what’s good to eat right now.

My chilli brings all the boys to the yard: the chilli challenge


  

When I innocently tweeted recently that my chilli brings all the boys to the yard, I did not expect the Spanish inquisition. Congratulating myself on the pleasure of taking leftover chilli into work for lunch, my fervour was heightened when a girl in the office kitchen actually commented, whilst drooling, that my leftover chilli “smelt amazing”. I knew it did, but I self-deferrentially and demurely thanked her and went back to my desk to write a gloat-tweet. I had not foreseen that I would be called out on my wild claims.
